Giraffes? Giraffes! (June 11)

Colorful duo Giraffes? Giraffes! comes to Soundlab on Wednesday (June 11) for a 9pm show. The band shares its name with a book, supposedly written by a Dr. & Mr. Doris Haggis-on-Whey. Giraffes? Giraffes! is the first in a series of pseudo-scientific, quasi children’s books that are filled with ridiculous misinformation. (For instance, that giraffes actually come from Neptune, that giraffes become very angry when asked about dancing, and that giraffes control over 90% of what we see in mirrors.) As for the band, math-rock, experimental instrumentals, and free jazz combine in their music, which is flavored by the quirky individualism that their moniker indicates. The first track off their latest album, 2007’s More Skin with Milk Mouth, is titled “When the Catholic Girls Go Camping, Nicotine Reigns Supreme,” more evidence of a humorous sensibility. Does this all sound like a whole bunch of nonsense? Nonsense! Victory Light Black Honey, Shock Cousteau, and birdfeeder open the show.
