Ryan Montbleau Band (June 13)

The Ryan Montbleau Band returns to Nietzsche’s on Friday (June 13) for a show at 10pm. Last year’s release, Patience on Friday—a tribute to the band’s good friend and backup drummer Denis Babin, who passed away in 2006— showcases the singer’s soulful style. Lyrically driven as always, the new songs may be a bit less sunny than fans are used to, but Montbleau’s funky mix of rock and R&B is in top form. If you want to get there early, come after 6pm for a happy hour show with Five to One.

Mannequin Men (June 13)

Chicago’s Mannequin Men will perform at Mohawk Place on Friday (June 13), bringing just the essentials: Two guitars, a bass, and drums. Their brand of stripped down, straight up rock-n-roll has garnered inevitable comparisons to the Stones and the Stooges, and while those influences are obvious, such comparisons are too simplistic. Often labelled as proto-punk as well, Mannequin Men just do what they do, and they do it damn well. The show starts at 10pm, and support comes from the Found and Chylde

Common Kings CD Release (June 14)

Buffalo’s the Common Kings will hold a CD Release Party at Club Infinity on Saturday (June 14) with special guests Standard of Living, Dan Erickson, the Hoodies, and Innocent Bystanders. The highly anticipated eight-track release, entitled Heavy Is the Crown, will be available at the show. This is a dual CD Release Concert with Standard of Living, who’ll be selling their their independently produced and recorded EP, Patience. It’s a local indie-rock extravaganza featuring some of the most popular acts around. Doors at Club Infinity open at 6pm.

El Ten Eleven with Lazlo Hollyfeld and Stand By Red Five (June 18)

California-based post-rock rock duo El Ten Eleven formed in 2004, after bassist/composer Kristian Dunn and drummer Tim Fogarty had left the experimental/organic/electronic four-piece they were playing with to strike out on their own. The music is a kind of ambient Americana, similar to the sound of Calexico if it merged with the weirdness of Tortoise or Sigur Ros. The two are also part of the San Diego band SoftLightes, and furnished much of the soundtrack to 2007’s independent documentary Helvetica, a movie about the typeface, a font whose beauty and elegance might compare to El Ten Eleven’s music, however odd that may sound. The show is headlined by Buffalo’s own Lazlo Hollyfeld, with support from Stand By Red Five. Doors open at 8pm on Wednesday (June 18), at Mohawk Place.
