Linda McRae with Jim Whitford (Sunday, June 22)

Linda McRae will play at the next house concert hosted by music lovers Marty Boratin and Sue Tanner on Sunday (June 22). You may remember McRae from her stint in Canadian Celtic folk alternative band Spirit of the West during their heyday. This time around, she’ll be bringing her alt. country folk rock to an intimate setting where audience members will have a chance to appreciate her bluegrass tinged vocals, and then say “hello” right afterward. Across the country, house concerts have become a staple gig to many touring folk artists, and these shows, staged at 7341 Nelson Drive in Hamburg, are put on by the best folks in the business. Opening for McRae is Hamburg native and Buffalo Music Hall of Famer Jim Whitford, one of the region’s most talented and beloved songwriter/musicians. Showtime is 6pm and the suggested donation is $10. Call 812-4671 for more info.

Peter Murphy of Bauhaus (Sunday, June 22)

Legendary Bauhaus singer and Goth pioneer Peter Murphy will appear in Buffalo this weekend. Since the fall of Bauhaus in 1983, Murphy embarked on a solo career that has seen its ups and downs. Yet he’s continued to build his following, developing an iconic image as the “Godfather of Goth” with each successive effort. His vampire-themed stage shows have had him suspended from the ceiling by his feet, bat-like, and/or rising from a coffin decked out in a full length black cape. His solo career has sometimes branched out musically, even so farinto the norm as “pseudo-pop,” but his haunting vocals and deep baritone always remain the same. A recent reunion with Bauhaus has culminated in a new release, 2008’s Go Away White, that may well be the band’s swan song. Peter Murphy will perform solo at the Tralf Music Hall, Sunday (June 22), at 8pm.

Shapes and Sizes (Wednesday, June 25)

Calling Montreal their home, Shapes and Sizes is a collective that collides pop with the avant garde. Taking the paranoid disco of the Arcade Fire, the experimentalism of Deerhoof, the quirky pop of Os Mutantes, and the psych-folk-pop of Neutral Milk Hotel, Shapes and Sizes can cover a lot of ground within the realm of one short song. After releasing their self- titled debut in 2005, the band caught the attention of Sufjan Stevens, who signed them to his his fledging Asthmatic Kitty record label. The band went on to record their second album, Split Lips, Winning Hips, A Shiner, a spontaneous-sounding release that is hard to peg down. Completely unpredictable and wildly entertaining, Shapes and Sizes perform at Mohawk Place on Wednesday (June 25) at 8pm. Opening are Red Tag Rummage Sale and Nick Gordon, both of whom have new recordings on the way,
