Shapes and Sizes (Wednesday, June 25)

Calling Montreal their home, Shapes and Sizes is a collective that collides pop with the avant garde. Taking the paranoid disco of the Arcade Fire, the experimentalism of Deerhoof, the quirky pop of Os Mutantes, and the psych-folk-pop of Neutral Milk Hotel, Shapes and Sizes can cover a lot of ground within the realm of one short song. After releasing their self- titled debut in 2005, the band caught the attention of Sufjan Stevens, who signed them to his his fledging Asthmatic Kitty record label. The band went on to record their second album, Split Lips, Winning Hips, A Shiner, a spontaneous-sounding release that is hard to peg down. Completely unpredictable and wildly entertaining, Shapes and Sizes perform at Mohawk Place on Wednesday (June 25) at 8pm. Opening are Red Tag Rummage Sale and Nick Gordon, both of whom have new recordings on the way,
