Alassane Sarr (July 3)

West African drummer and dancer Alassane Sarr comes from a griot family in Dakar. The griot tradition combines music with storytelling to communicate cultural history. Alassane trained at the School of Art in Dakar before going on to become a principal dancer in Senegal’s Silimbo Dance Company. When the company travelled to the States in 1991, Sarr remained in the US to perform and teach throughout the country. He currently teaches West African dance and drumming, Senegalese history, drum-making, leather jewelry making, and costume design. He will perform in the Mix with Emile Latimer at Nietzsche’s next Thursday (July 3), at 10pm, featuring Royal African drumming and Tooba ballet. Ramforinkus opens the show at 9pm.
