US Marshals vs. the Indians at Buffalo Creek?

by Bruce Jackson

On July 8, US District Court Judge William M. Skretny published his order vacating the ruling of the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) that the Seneca Nation of Indians (SNI) could legally operate a gambling casino on property they owned in downtown Buffalo. The Senecas’ land fit the legal definition of “Indian country,” and they could do anything on it the law permitted, which did not include gambling.

Weirdos Riot: What's Wrong With the Buffalo News?

by Michael I. Niman

10 US Forest Service police officers arrest a man in Wyoming for crime of being “uncooperative.” Add the freak show specter of “eccentrics” and “hippie types” throwing rocks and sticks, however, and in the era of Jerry Springer, you’ve got the makings of a national news story. Hence, nearly 2,000 miles away, the Buffalo News ran the story under the headline, “5 arrested in Rainbow Family clash with feds.”

The Campaign

Wonks and Words

by Bruce Fisher

Next week in Washington, respected specialists will gather at the Brookings Institution to unveil a set of carefully reasoned recommendations on how, where, and how much the next president should invest in the roads, bridges, transit lines, and wi-fi—in a word, the infrastructure—that will keep our economy going.

Essay

Greening Buffalo

by Sam Magavern

Across the United States, cities are launching green initiatives. Environmentalists are focusing on cities because that’s where the action is. By 2030, the world will be two-thirds urban. The earth’s future depends on what happens in cities: whether they grow compactly or sprawl; whether their buildings are energy efficient or wasteful; whether they encourage mass transit or driving; whether they build coal plants or wind farms.

Now you’d think, that in these times of high gas prices, if you’re sitting pretty with a vehicle in your showrooms which is practical, reliable, and gets a combined EPA mileage figure of over 30 miles per gallo—you’d think you’d keep that research and development money in the bank and just keep sellin’ cars. Why waste that hard-earned stockholders’ cash on new models when you’re already selling everything you can build?

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free,” said the sculptor Michelangelo about a statue he made. Let that approach be your guide in the coming weeks, Leo. Proceed according to the hypothesis that the beautiful thing you want to create is embedded in stuff that’s hiding its true nature, and your job is simply to liberate it from what’s extraneous.

Advice

Ask Anyone

What with the price of gasoline, it seems like every wedding is a destination wedding now. I have a cousin getting married in Baltimore at the end of August, and no matter how I manage it—airline tickets or two tanks of gas—the trip down will cost as much as the motel room for two nights. I’m not cheap, but I am broke. Can I go without bringing a wedding present? And, if I do go sans gift, should I explain I can’t afford it so they don’t think I’m just a thoughtless jerk?
