The Fiery Furnaces

Darn those clever Friedberger kids. As if the Brooklyn-based brother/sister duo of Matthew and Eleanor weren’t already steadily positioned at the cusp of indie significance with their musical meanderings—regularly testing the limits of rock by their melding folk, garage, blues, psych, experimental and beyond—now they are showing their political savvy to boot. The Furnaces latest test to fans takes aim at the demystification of the perplexing caucus process. While Iowans recently made their voices heard regarding candidates for 2008’s presidential contest, the Friedbergers have netizens doing virtual gatherings for what they call a “on-line non-binding caucus to determine the Fiery Furnaces’ next album.” While the decision making involved in choosing between Roughing It (Or Two Delinquent Dads) and Archer Ave. Cupid’s Corner isn’t quite on par with Obama v. Clinton, it’s certainly added another interesting wrinkle to the career of a band that has continuously stayed musically challenging. Go online at www.thefieryfurnaces.com for more on the album title caucusing. Go to the Tralf this Tuesday to see Fiery Furnaces in action, still touring behind their feted 2007 album Widow City (Thrill Jockey). And as for 2008’s album title? That could still be up to you: Get to caucusing!
