It’s a proven fact: There’s just not enough rock and soul in the world. A certain Philadelphia duo called Hall and Oates made rock and soul their trade back in the 1970s before they sold their souls (and most of the rock that went it) and became MTV hitmakers in the decade that followed. There’s been another Philadelphia-born duo busting their hump to bring it back for the last ten years: Marah’s Serge and Dave Bielanko. Of course, the Bielanko boys and their gang are much more a cross of Philly punks the Dead Milkmen and R&B powerhouses Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, shot with a heavy dose of their New Jersey neighbor Bruce Springsteen’s stadium salvation. The band’s fifth album proper—not including their terrific Christmas or live records—Angels of Destruction! (Yep Roc) is a raucous, testifying soul rock party as only Marah can throw. Poured in are detailed stories of being lost—figuratively and literally—around the world and continually chasing the angels that guide the journey. Marah returns to the Queen City to continue what has been a string of barn burning shows throughout their career. Also playing are Adam and Dave’s Bloodline from Philadelphia, and Buffalo’s own Semi-Tough returns to the action in support.
