Jucifer (Friday, July 25)

Formed in 1994, Jucifer predated the two piece rock band idea by many years. Although they are armed with only a guitar and drums, the band is so schizophrenic in nature that it’s difficult to really explain what they do. From soft acoustic pieces to orchestral whims to heavy assault metallic grooves, Jucifer can sound both pretty and ominous. After working with two different ill fated record labels, the band signed to ultra hip metal label Relapse, which reissued If Thine Enemy Hunger and has just released their amazing double album, L’autrichienne, which has been receiving rave reviews for its moments of beauty and intesnity. Live, the band has forged a reputation as one of the loudest imaginable. Playing in front of a full wall of amps, the shows are mind numbing events, where sound just envelops the audience. Jucifer performs at Mohawk Place on Friday (July 25), at 10pm. Chylde and Sonorous Gale open the show.

Queen City Jazz Festival (Saturday, July 26)

The third annual Queen City Jazz Festival happens on the streets outside the venerable Colored Musicians Club, located at 145 Broadway near Michigan, this Saturday (July 26) from 1-8pm. This year’s entertainment features Carol McLaughlin (pictured), Art Anderson Modern Sound, Jazz Line, Charles Reedy and Friends, Joyce Carolyn, Round Midnight, the JWN Band and Will Holton. The Jazz Festival is a family-oriented, free event. Mclaughlin will also play earlier in the day at the Community Music School’s Annual Rising Stars Open House, with the Carol McLaughlin Trio, from 12:30-2pm. Listen to jazz standards and classics, tour the school, and try out the state of the art instruments.

David Lee & His Mercenaries (Sunday, July 27)

For the past few years, guitarist David Lee was responsible for part of the backwoods hellraising sound of Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers. Sliding between country, rockabilly, blues, punk, and hardcore, Lee’s guitar playing transcended boundaries, giving the Shack Shakers an almost undefinable sound. However, in the past few months, Lee has parted ways with the band and is now fronting his own three piece, David Lee & His Mercenaries. Although the band is brand new and just starting their own mini tour of the Northeast, Lee promises something of a menacing sound along the lines of Charlie Feathers meets Mastodon. With such a description, the band is likely to build on the sound Lee forged with his former band. David Lee & His Mercenaries perform at Mohawk Place on Sunday (July 27) at 8pm. Liquid Violence and Rochester rockabilly band 40 Rod Lightning open the show.
