Pfaff, Flood, and Gorman (August 1)

Pfaff, Flood, and Gorman are an original three piece instrumental band new in Buffalo, a graceful combination of styles and genres including rock, blues, funk, jazz, drum-n-bass, garage surf, and psychedelia. The players include Jason Pfaff (Rainbow Girls, Ribcage), Eben Flood (Jakey Hollow), and Brian Gorman (Daddybear) on drums, guitar, and bass, respectively. They’re playing this Friday (August 1) at Broadway Joe’s, on a double bill with local indie rock band Thrown to the Wolves. Pfaff, Flood, and Gorman vs. Thrown to the Wolves starts at midnight, following Greg Klyma’s CD Release Party (check out the See You There section, this issue).

The Infringiement Festival Continues

The Infringement Festival continues this weekend, culminating in a grand finale to be held at Nietzsche’s on Sunday (August 3). Saturday night (August 2), the festival infringes outside of Allentown, downtown to Soundlab (110 Pearl St.) with a show featuring local bands Iceberg, Qualia, Jupiter Jefferson, and Needle Up! (pictured). Needle Up! has appeared with numerous national acts including Juliette Lewis & the Licks, the Butchies, Rasputina, Matt Pond PA, Q & Not U, and Bitch (of Bitch & the Exciting Conclusion, Bitch & Animal, and Shortbus)—who reportedly declared Needle Up! to be her new favorite band. Quite an endorsement. Check them all out, starting at 9pm.

Mates of State with Judgement Day (August 6)

Indie duo Mates of State is composed of the husband-and-wife team Kori Gardner (vocals, organ, synthesizer, piano, and guitar) and Jason Hammel (vocals, drum set, glockenspiel, synths, and other percussion). The couple met in their hometown of Lawrence, Kansas (that latest hotbed of indie rock), relocated to the Bay Area for a while, and now resides in New York. Cute as can be, the band is notable for its quirky harmonies and song structures, and the couple’s ability to complement each other while simultaneously working different melodies. Maybe it’s that marriage thing? Mates of State play at the Tralf on Wednesday (August 6), with San Francisco string-metal band Judgement Day. The show starts at 8pm.
