Predicting 2020 in Upstate NY

by Bruce Fisher

It’s time we became a suburb of Toronto. That’s the best advice I can give after reading a sobering study of population trends in all of America’s counties and Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs).

Stop Stalling, Says The Judge

by Bruce Jackson

Sometimes the lawsuit brought by a group of citizens and citizens’ organizations to block the Senecas’ downtown Buffalo casino seems like a soap opera: You think the plot is actually getting somewhere but then you realize it’s just going around one more time, and may very well continue doing so until all the current players have been worn out and replaced.

News of the Weird

by Chuck Shepherd

As Denton, Texas, Pizza Patron employee Stephanie Martinez complied with a disguised robber’s demand for money at closing in July, a co-worker jumped the man, knocked him down, and began beating on him. As the robber’s sunglasses and wig fell off, Martinez recognized him: “Don’t hit him again! That’s my dad!”

Philip Elliott: Shelocta, PA

by Dean Brownrout

As you come upon Shelocta, PA (1943), a painting in the permanent collection of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, you might think that you were viewing an Edward Hopper. This American scene painting is in fact by Philip Elliott (1903-1985), who lived and worked in Buffalo.

Nick Gordon: City Where You Love to Lose Your Mind

by Donny Kutzbach

Nick Gordon breaks from his role at the center of orgiastic post-punks London Vs. New York to be the organic singer/songwriter type, but—hold the phone—it’s not that simple.

Nicole Kidman Never Heard of Us

by Anthony Chase

When I received the Google alert on Saturday afternoon that Nicole Kidman had made an impassioned plea for the rescue of Studio Arena Theatre in Buffalo, New York, I thought it was peculiar. To my knowledge, Kidman has no connection to Buffalo whatsoever, and little connection to American regional theater of any kind.

Sangria is From Spain

by Paula Paradise

Recently I was called upon to sacrifice the comforts of my day job, hobnobbing with likeminded wine geeks amongst thousands of bottles, so that I might spend a long weekend in New Hampshire visiting with my sister, parents, grandmother, and almost-grown nieces.

The long of it being the new 2009 Hyundai Genesis, the Korean automaker’s dipping of the toe into the premium luxury sedan market. That would make the short of it the Hyundai Accent, an entry-level subcompact that has a starting price of a mere $11,395. The Genesis on the other hand, starts at $33,000 for the V-6, and $38,000 for the V-8.

Free Will Astrology

by Rob Breszny

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): It’s a perfect time to work more intensely on cultivating a healthy relationship between money and your soul. For inspiration, read this wise counsel, articulated by Margaret Young and quoted in Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way. “Many people attempt to live their lives backwards. They try to have more money in order to do more of what they want so they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want.”

Advice

Ask Anyone

I’ve just married my boyfriend of five years. He wants us to merge our finances. I’m hesitant, even though he’s a trustworthy guy I love who’s financially stable, and he’s hurt. Is there something wrong with me? I just don’t think it’s a good idea.
