Film Now Playing

Film Now Playing showcases what's new and what's interesting in the movies this week...

OPENING THIS WEEK:

BURN AFTER READING—Joel and Ethan Coen are back into humorous mode (and god knows they must have some jokes ready to use after the dead-serious No Country For Old Men brought them their first Oscar last year) with this spy comedy starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt as guys who discover the diary of CIA agent John Malkovich and decide to publish it. With Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton, Richard Jenkins, and J.K. Simmons. Reviewed this issue. Amherst, Flix, Regal Elmwood, Regal Hollywood, Regal Quaker, Regal Transit, Regal Walden Galleria

RIGHTEOUS KILL—Advance word isn’t great, but how can you not at least be curious about the first film in which Robert De Niro and Al Pacino actually co-star (as opposed to Heat, in which they shared minimal screen time)? But neither star has been at the top of his game for years, and you gotta wish they’d picked a stronger director than Jon Avnet (Pacino’s recent flop 88 Minutes). With Curtis Jackson, John Leguizamo, Donnie Wahlberg and Brian Dennehy. Maple Ridge, Market Arcade, Regal Elmwood, Regal Hollywood, Regal Quaker, Regal Transit, Regal Walden Galleria, Transit Drive In

THE FAMILY THAT PREYS—Tyler Perry movie starring Alfre Woodard, and Kathy Bates as the mothers of two families whose lives become interwined by scandals. With Sanaa Lathan, Rockmond Dunbar, and Robin Givens. Flix, Maple Ridge, Market Arcade, Regal Elmwood, Regal Hollywood, Regal Quaker, Regal Transit, Regal Walden Galleria

THE WOMEN—Buffalo native and “Murphy Brown” creator Diane English makes her directorial debut with this remake of the 1939 classic starring an all-female cast (which makes us wonder about Mick Jagger’s credit as co-producer). With Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett Smith, Bette Midler, Candice Bergen, Carrie Fisher, Cloris Leachman, Debi Mazar, and Joanna Gleason. Reviewed this issue. Flix, Maple Ridge, Market Arcade, Regal Elmwood, Regal Hollywood, Regal Quaker, Regal Transit, Regal Walden Galleria

ETC:

THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938)—One of the most entertaining action movies ever to come out of Hollywood, with Errol Flynn in peak form as the bandit of Sherwood Forest. Co-starring Olivia de Havilland, Patric Knowles, Alan Hale, and Eugene Pallette as Friar Tuck. Directed by Michael Curtiz and William Keighley. Presented as part of the Buffalo Film Seminar. Tues 7 pm, Market Arcade Film and Arts Center, 639 Main St. (855-3022).

The Screening Room, 3131 Sheridan Drive, Amherst (837-0376) www.screeningroom.net
