IGOR—Animated parody of horror movies with John Cusack as the voice of a mad doctor’s assistant who longs to break out as a scientist in his own right. GHOST TOWN—Ricky Gervais makes his starring debut in this comedy as a dentist who becomes cursed with the ability to see and speak to ghosts who have loose ends they want him to take care of. Co-starring Téa Leoni and Greg Kinnear. Directed by David Koepp (Secret Window). Sept. 19

LAKEVIEW TERRACE—Neil LaBute (In the Company of Men) directed—but didn’t write—this thriller starring Samuel L. Jackson as an LA cop obsessed with the interracial couple With Patrick Wilson, Kerry Washington and Ron Glass.

MY BEST FRIEND’S GIRL—Dane Cook is hired by his best friend to take his ex-girlfriend (Kate Hudson) on a lousy date so she’ll want to take him back. People get paid good money to write this stuff. Co-starring Alec Baldwin and Jason Biggs. Directed by Howard Deutch (The Whole Ten Yards).

BRUTE FORCE (1947)—Classic prison drama starring Burt Lancaster as a prisoner who organizes a revolt against the brutal guard (Burt Lancaster) who controls their lives.
