Live in Glasgow
(Warner Music/Rhino)
I am calling bullshit on the guys at Buffalo’s Transmission Dance Party. The local crew who has made it okay for the cool kids to dance in the Queen City with their bi-monthly shindigs are clearly out of their minds.
Their supposed faceoff on October 18 is themed “New Order vs. Depeche Mode.” As if Depeche Mode stands a chance! I think Peter Hook alone could outcool and outrock Depeche with just four strings and his beard. Seriously, though: If you need proof of New Order’s greatness even into this millennium, the latest in Warner Music/Rhino’s ongoing series of New Order DVDs has it. Recorded at Glasgow’s Carling Academy in October 2006, this live set showcases an energized band tearing through New Order classics like “Ceremony,” “Blue Monday,” and “True Faith,” as well as more than just up-to-snuff newer songs like “Crystal” and “Krafty.” Most noteworthy, Live in Glasgow—after some 25 years—captures Hook, Bernard Sumner, and Steve Morris in a full re-embrace of Joy Division songs, including “These Days,” “Shadowplay,” “Transmission,” and “Love Will Tear Us Apart.” Even for those who doubt the latter-day New Order’s ability to deliver the goods, this remains more than a curio with the inclusion of a stunning second disc of live performances dating back to their Glastonbury debut in 1981 and including a slew of legendary live moments in the 1980s. And there’s better news still: In November Rhino is releasing deluxe/expanded double disc versions of Movement, Power, Corruption & Lies, Low-Life, Brotherhood, and Technique. So suck it, Dave Gahan!

Be there when Bill Page (in the New Order corner) mops up the Mohawk with Aaron Andrews (sadly repping Depeche Mode) on Saturday, October 18. For more info, go to myspace.com/transmissiondance.

Huge fan of both bands. Always felt New Order's impact on music was under
appreciated. That being said, they don't hold a candle to Depeche Mode in
concert! The energy I feel at every Depeche show continues to impress.
Last time I saw New Order was a special evening for certain, first time
they played Joy Division tunes in like 25 years (Chemical Brothers opened
for them in San Jose). But Bernard doesn't have the voice, or the presence
that Dave does on stage. Love both bands, but if I had to pick one to see,
Depeche would win every time.

New order outrocking and outcooling DM!!! dont make me laugh....New order
have two songs to their bow....depche have a whole legacy...love to see new
order try to sell out across the world as Depeche still do. New order in
comparison to depeche are one-dimensional and bland to say the least.
Depche keep going and alwayts will and bloody hell are the coolest band
ever....why else would U2 copy them in style and videos.....D

I don't know of any bands that even come close to the same category as
Depeche, New Order though I love their music doesn't hold a candle to the
talent and creativity of Depeche.

I'm sorry, but much as i have a lot of respect for New Order, in essence, I
can only recollect 3 decent songs. Depeche Mode have lacked any real
commercial backing for years - yet still sell out stadiums all around the
world. When was the last time New Order played Stade De Paris, Olympic
stadium or the San Siro like DM will be next year!

I'm glad I stirred up the Depeche love. Of course I really like them and
own or owned every DM record through SONGS OF FAITH AND DEVOTION. I
probably watched DM 101 about two dozen times way back when and loved it.
In hindsight, 101 feels like they were trying to reach for the U2 brass
ring, make it their Rattle & Hum. In some ways they achieved. They are
still playing stadiums, after all. The cut off for me is ULTRA which makes
me question if Alan Wilder was the surprising lynchpin in the band. For me,
it will always be about New Order.
