Fourth line rocks in disappointing homestand

by Andrew Kulyk & Peter Farrell

The Buffalo Sabres came home last week after lighting up the league, and fans were anticipating an October to remember. And why not? The team was 6-0-2 after eight games. They were the last team left standing with no regulation losses. Their defense had raised the bar, not allowing any power play goals. Collecting three out of four points on the road against two tough teams, Minnesota and Colorado, felt especially satisfying.

The warp and woof of Waldorf

by J. Tim Raymond

We were 10 minutes out of East Aurora driving her Prius south with Juliet Bice, long-time handworks teacher and advocate in various Waldorf education programs regionally. I was taking a tour of the Waldorf school in West Falls, in what was once a public elementary school building.

by Jan Jezioro

This Sunday evening, November 9 at 8pm, the UB Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of its young, dynamic music director and conductor Christian Baldini, will offer the Buffalo premiere of a major symphonic work in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall on the Amherst Campus. Local classical music lovers might well ask, “So what’s the big deal?”

Theaterweek

God's Favorite, Area, and The Cavalcaders

by Anthony Chase

It’s been many years since I’ve been to a dinner theater. Back in the heyday of dinner theater, I went to many, from Burt Reynolds’ in Jupiter, to Jan McArt’s in Boca Raton, to StageWest in Mississauga and, of course, to Desiderio’s Dinner Theatre here in Western New York. Dinner theater of the 1970s and 1980s was a major incubator for the thriving theater scene we enjoy in this region today.

News of the Weird

by Chuck Shepherd

Recent research in the Journal of Economic Analysis and Policy sheds light on the thorny social issue of why females continue to earn less money than males, even in similar jobs. Competing hypotheses have been advanced: It’s either gender discrimination or simply that more women than men de-emphasize career aggressiveness in favor of family.

A call for grassroots action

by Rebekah Williams

I remember the disgust and despair I felt as a local organizer after the 2004 election. I told myself that in order to deal with a federal government that disregards the needs and abilities of working people and the middle-class, we people—the grassroots—needed to rally a strong community network to promote local economic opportunities and to encourage environmental sensibility.

Free Will Astrology

by Rob Brezsny

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Should you go with the flow or should you try to wheedle, manipulate, and entice the flow to go with you? This is one of those rare times when I advocate the latter approach. The flow is currently in an indecisive state, when it could go one of several different ways. You have cosmic authorization to nudge it in the direction that looks to you like it will be the best for the most people.

My friend is very upset. On the evening of Election Day, her husband confessed to her that he did not vote for president. Apparently, he couldn’t decide, so he didn’t make a choice. He went on to say that he did however vote for the local candidates—by closing his eyes and randomly pressing levers.
