Tear Down the Skyway Now |

We are closer than ever to getting an important piece of the waterfront developed. The photos of the proposed canal side village are encouraging. What is disappointing is that the Skyway is there. From what I have read it seems that I am the only person upset about this. Having a highway above a heads of people trying to appreciate the history of the Erie Canal makes as much sense as having a man is a space suit walking around Williamsburg.
Let’s think this over. The Obama administration has expressed a desire to dedicate billions of dollars improving our country’s infrastructure. There has never been a better time to get the feds to pay to remove that under used highway! That road has outlived its intended purpose. That road has scarred the face of our waterfront since 1956.
Boston received over $14 billion dollars to remove their elevated highway and built tunnels. What we need is far less than the money they wasted. We deserve federal funds to remove ours.
Tell Larry Quinn, Brian Higgins, and Chuck Schumer that the time to remove the Skyway is now and we want them to find the money to do it.
This must not turn into another Buffalo “we should have.” We can’t blow this opportunity. We will not get another chance.

Absolutely! Its clear to all who have seen similar situations in other
cities who tore down elevated highways to improve access to waterfronts
that removing the skyway is the right and smart thing to do. The pressure
must be maintained. Keep writing and talking about it! Like getting a
spectacular Signature Bridge to replace the Peace Bridge, it takes a
determined, sustained effort to make it happen. It may take years, but
that's what it takes to overcome entrenched interests. Keep up the fight!!
