Nick Gordon |
London vs. New York guitarist Nick Gordon brings out his debut solo CD this week with a CD Release Party at Mohawk Place on Friday (Feb. 8). Titled It’s a Chemical Drag, But It’s Not That Bad, the album fuses the post-modern rock stylings of London vs. New York with a loose take on sixties and seventies songwriting and roots Americana—well-versed, of course, in modern hipster slang. The show will also include special guest performances from spoken word artist Stephen Goss, Red Tag Rummage Sale, the Thunder Brothers (featuring Jamison and Joey V. from Handsome Jack) and the Thermidors. Doors are at 9pm |

Bob Marley's 63rd Birthday Celebration |
On Wednesday (Feb. 6), reggae legend Bob Marley’s 63rd birthday will be celebrated globally, as it is each year. And each year in Buffalo his anniversary is marked by a tribute show at Nietzsche’s, which will take place this year on Saturday (Feb. 9). Neville Francis & the Riddim Posse, along with the Dreadbeats featuring Tom Fenton, will lead the show, covering timeless favorites by the “Godfather of reggae.” Pop open a few Red Stripes and bask in the warmth of the music, a soothing retreat from the cold February night. The music starts about 9pm. |

Third Eye Blind |
On the San Francisco rock scene, the band Third Eye Blind has been a visible presence since the mid-nineties. While many other bands were heading south to tinseltown, 3eB stuck it out in the Bay area, somewhere in-between the grungy Seattle scene and the glam of SoCal. The music walks that line as well, sounding authentically DIY, raw and contradictory. After a decade of line-up changes and their most recent album over five years old, 3eB has announced its second coming with the expected release of The Hideous Strength (tentative title) sometime this year. A pre-release tour brings them to the Town Ballroom on Wednesday (Feb. 13). Doors open at 7pm. |

Anal Pudding |
Self-described as the “unbleachable skidmark in the underpants of Western New York’s music scene,” Anal Pudding has decided to throw in the towel (along with the underpants) on its five-year long run. The tongue-in-cheek, Zappa-esque stalwarts of live music venues like Merlin’s, the Showplace, Tudor Lounge, Mohawk Place, Diablo and about every other club you could mention will play a farewell gig at Nietzsche’s next Thursday (Feb. 14), before going on an “undetermined hiatus.” The reasons for this are yet to be revealed, but AP warns that they “might never come back so...come out.” This show doubles as a five year anniversary celebration for the band, making the occasion all the more bittersweet. It all gets started at 9pm |

JP Losman is sacked. AV correspondent Dave Staba reports…posted December 2, 11:16 am on Artvoice DailyJP Losman is sacked. AV correspondent Dave Staba reports on Sunday’s loss from the cheap seats at Ralph Wilson Stadium: Trent Edwards rolled to his right. And he rolled to his right. And then he rolled some more. Finally, a moment before he would have run completely off the field, Buffalo’s quarterback flung the ball towards his intended receiver, who was evidently sitting in a third-row seat near the southerly corner at the tunnel end of Ralph Wilson Stadium... West Side Neighborhood Housing Servicesposted November 28, 3:44 pm on Artvoice DailyAs promised in this article, the membership list for West Side Neighborhood Housing Services is right here. Highlighted in yellow are city employees who report to the mayor or their relatives; highlighted in pink are other city employees. Most of the highlighted names (though not all) are new members, who joined just in time to vote at last Thursday’s annual members meeting, when Harvey Garrett was voted off WSNHS’s board... (more) |
On the Waterfrontposted November 26, 2:00 pm on Artvoice DailySo you think Buffalo has a hard time figuring out what to do with its waterfront, do ya? Mad that we can’t just build a signature bridge, huh? Madder still that we can’t just knock the Skyway bridge down? Furious with obstructionists who don’t want a Bass Pro Shop? Livid about the ice boom? And don’t even get you started about all the blind, misguided fools who can’t see that a huge casino downtown will turn our city around? Yes, my friend, you do in fact have all the answers... (more) |

Another Voiceposted November 26, 10:11 am on Artvoice DailyHere’s something that drives me crazy about the Buffalo News: the “Another Voice” column on the editorial page. It would be a nice idea, except that so often it is not given over to “another” voice. It is given, rather, to the same old voices: to people who are frequently quoted as sources in articles, who are in positions of political or economic power, to folks whose job is to push agendas—to people, in other words, who have no difficulty making their voices heard... Paint the Townposted November 14, 11:06 am on Artvoice DailyLate last night, at the tail end of one of the few weeks in the past year in which we did not publish anything snarky about anybody, someone threw two gallons of paint on our front doors. Seems a waste; we hadn’t even earned it. Nonetheless, we were cleaning up all morning... (more) |
