Poetry

For Billy Collins
Humming lawnmowers
Cut silence in long blades
Rowboats in hell
Educating me
You’re not prepared
When you came
You read the faded,
Chalky horses
Stabled decapitated heads
In your poetic mind
Yellow sulfur dyes
Cereal milk
Drink it under the table
They might see you
Describe everything

Paper Boats
It’s bedtime for squirrels and people, but not us.
We make paper boats to throw out the windows.
They stick in the gutters and litter the driveway.
We’ll pick them up later—
When the squirrels wake up and the trees aren’t dark anymore.
Now we’ll look at twinkling airplane lights.
You’ll twist my silk shirt in your fingers
And ask for more paper.
