TOKYO STORY (Japan, 1953)—An aging Japanese couple leave their rural home to visit their children in the city, a trip that brings painful revelations as well as a measure of peace. Yasujiro Ozu’s deceptively simple drama is one of the most quietly beautiful films ever made: if you’ve never seen a movie by this Japanese master, by no means should you miss this.
