Round 2, Week 1: The Broadcast vs. The Nepenthe

CONGRATULATIONS to Peanut Brittle Satellite! You collected the most votes at the packed-house live BOOM final at Nietzsche’s on December 26. That’s why you’re now going into Audio Magic recording studio to lay down some tracks. Special thanks go out to runners-up The Manics, A Hotel Nourishing, and Kryszt. You all have a great sound that moves a lot of people, if the swollen ballot box is any indication. You all made it a great night.

This week we kick off the competition for our second BOOM quarterfinal. One of the bands to the right will win a spot on our next live showdown at Nietzsche’s on Friday, February 13. In order to do that, they’ll need to collect the most votes by Tuesday, January 13. Head over to the BOOM! page to cast your vote, and check out music from all our contestants through now.

Of course, bands are encouraged to get out the vote any way they can short of stuffing the ballot box. Our IT guy is very savvy, and he’ll be monitoring the votes more closely than an election lawyer in Ohio. If you’re caught cheating, you can be disqualified. And there’s nowhere to appeal our decision.

Musicians, there’s still time to enter BOOM, even if you’ve entered before. Visit Artvoice.com to find out how your band can enter the fray.

The rewards for the winners are great. They will receive a recording package from Audio Magic, and 100 CDs of that recording from ESP CD & DVD Manufacturing. The four winners of our live quarterfinals will face off in our Grand Finale in May. The winner that night will win a slot on WBFO’s Wednesday night concerts live from Allen Hall, a video produced by Artvoice, and a nice cash prize as well.

We’re happy to present this contest with the help of our great sponsors: Audio Magic, ESP, WBFO and Neitzsche's. They all play a vital role in making our town a hotspot of original music. But we can’t make msic without u. And may the best band win.

Voting runs Jan 8 - 13. Click here to vote!

When did the band form? Three fourths of us grew up in Albany, and we started jamming in high school. We came to UB for school, where Tom Varco (a Buffalo native) joined us. We moved into an apartment in North Buffalo together about a year and a half ago and here we are now!

You might like us if you like: Someone once told us we sound like a cross between Radiohead and Incubus, and that’s the best description we have. But we mix a variety of genres into our music; we go from hard rock to jazzy latin rock, to nu-funk and bluesy stuff.

List of recorded releases: The Broadcast (EP) 2008

Best show ever played: Over the summer, we played a great show at Nietzsche’s. Everything sounded great, we were tight, there was a great crowd, and we were at the perfect level of intoxication. And Kenny got us a great recording out of it!

Why you should win the Artvoice.com Online Battle of Original Music: Our music stretches across genres, providing something for everyone. We’ve had people of all ages and backgrounds groovin’ to our tunes at shows. But we’re more interested in why you, the listener, think we deserve to win.

Listen to Pied Piper by The Nepenthe

When did the band form? July of ‘08, on the shores of Lake Erie.

You might like us if you like: Any rock band with a chick singer.

List of recorded releases: Psalmodies

Best show ever played: Has to be when we just happened to stop by the Tudor Lounge open mic. Insanity ensued, as it usually does with us, and the boys ended up playing bizarre outer space Louisianna swamp rock, while a Tom Waits-y dude hopped on stage and screamed violent Jim Morrison poetry on top of it, while a local over-50 actor grabbed a mic and told Vaudevillian jokes between guttural shouts of “we’re all crazy!”. Needless to say, crackheads and hipsters alike were running, shouting, crying and/or laughing. It was amazing.

Why you should win the Artvoice.com Online Battle of Original Music: We are a great band, who love to rock, and want to bring some glory back to Buffalo. We want everyone to have as good a time listening to our music, as we do making and performing it, and we put our heart and soul to making sure the music you hear is amazing. Rock on Buffalo!
