Still Composing Your Letter to The Public Bridge Authority, Senator?

Tonawanda residents suffering the effects of deadly emissions from the Tonawanda Coke plant have finally been validated by Senator Charles Schumer, with recent reinforcement from Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

With this type of support, Tonawanda should be see swift improvement in ambient air quality. But while the senators’ action here is laudable, they—Senator Schumer in particular—have failed to act on behalf of other of their constituents suffering from an equally grave health threat.

Apparently, putting a private corporation on notice to become compliant with federal regulations is politically preferable to dealing similarly with a “friendly offender” such as the Public Bridge Authority.

Like their counterparts in Tonawanda, Peace Bridge neighborhood residents have presented irrefutable scientific and medical evidence to Senator Schumer of a variety of serious illnesses linked to toxic air on Buffalo’s west side. Air samples 12 blocks away from the Peace Bridge measure dangerously high levels of cancer-causing toxins—toxins produced by the relentless emissions of Peace Bridge diesel truck traffic.

Not only has the senator ignored thousands of letters, emails, and other contacts, he has stedfastly maintained his support of the current Peace Bridge expansion plan while ignoring the catastrophic effect it would have on the environment and health of west side residents.

As an elected officials, Senator Schumer is obligated to expose every private or public interest that threatens air quality. Pollution does not discriminate. No one should have to pick a poison based on where that person lives.

Certo makes an excellent point. Our elected officials, especially our federal ones, are nothing if not inconsistent. As long as the Buffalo News ed board stands firmly behind this project despite all the evidence, so will Schumer. He and Higgins and the others are so needy and afraid that they won't cross the news in a one paper town even if they wanted to. They want that endorsement and continued headlines. Whether a project is good for the region or not isn't even in the equation.

The only federal elected person we have with any courage or gumption is Louise Slaughter.

Isn't the peace bridge in Erie Co. Leg. Maria Whyte's district? She has a direct link to Clean Air Coalition through her husband who is CEO or Pres. of the Board. If CAC was so successful getting Schumer and Gillibrand on board in Tonawanda, why haven't they looked at the peace bridge pollution?

Ton. residents had the support of Co. Leg. Ianello so you'd think that west side residents would have a better shot with Whyte as their advocate for cleaning up the peace bridge pollution. What gives with that?

I've read more articles about the peace bridge plaza than the Ton. Coke plant. So it's not like it's an obscure problem that hasn't had plenty of media exposure (especially in AV.

Looks like another example of political cherry picking at the expense of WS residents. Peter Certo is right. Pollution doesn't discriminate - but apparently politicians do!

How much evidence do they need?

The worst poison in the most prevelance in the world is deisel exhaust particulate emmissions from idling trucks.

If your family is free of asthma and respiratory problems, move them anywhere within 12 blocks of the Peace bridge. Asthma and rspiratory problems are 100% guaranteed.

Asthma not your issue? Try jogging for an hour while breathing from a straw. That's what hundreds upon hundreds of kids on Buffalo's West Side go through constantly.

Go Bills-- and take the Peace Bridge with you.
