Letters to Artvoice
McCarley Gardens
Artvoice is to be commended for bringing to the attention of the public the efforts by the University to acquire McCarley Gardens and Pilgrim Village to make way for its Oak Street Campus (“Just Looking for a Home,” Artvoice v8n46).
As chairman for the Committee for an Urban University in 1966 which sought to have the University build its new campus on Buffalo’s downtown waterfront, it was done with the idea that residential populations would exist withing the University campus. Although I commend the move by the University to move into the city, I object to it wantin to swallow up both of these developments as well as possibly Langston Hughes Center, the major African-American Cultural Center in the area.
Such a move might be profitable for the owners of these institution, but they should not do so at the expense of their residents who have built stable communities in the area for over 25 years.

What is all of this about UB moving into the city? Ever heard of the South Campus? Is this just a game of musical chairs, move the medical school off the South Campus and to McCarley Gardens. What will become of the notorious South Campus? Will it just languish in the crime zone that is has become? We all see that UB is abandoning the University Heights. Now the Fruit Belt will go through urban renewal in order to allow UB to move into the city (or move from one place in the city to another). What a waste of money, what an insult to the people already living in the footprint of UB's boot.
