The Square

The four principal characters in Nash and Joel Edgerton’s noiristic The Square are morally compromised or just dirty as the movie gets under way. And they only get more so as it goes forward.

Here and There

Jim Jarmusch fans, at least those of his early films, will be the most appreciative audience for this slight but appealing urban fairy tale that plays out in two cities. Manhattan is home base for Robert (David Thornton), an aging musician who has withdrawn from everything, beginning with the saxophone he hasn’t played in years.

The Secret in Their Eyes

A man sits at a desk writing scenes in the language of fiction. He composes three of them, which we see enacted, then disposes of each. They don’t express what he wants to say, but they are so different that we wonder, what kind of story could contain each of these moments at the same place?
