Killing Made Hip and Flip

I am writing to strongly object to the inclusion of the article “A Lobster Treatise” in your Summer Food issue last week. The graphic description of the killing of live lobsters in a hip and flip tone was like a razor in an apple nestled as it was among such pleasant summer titles as “Cool Patios, Sexy Cocktails” and “Dip into Summer.” At the least this article needed a warning—“This article will be deeply disturbing to any human with sensitivity for sentient life.”

Batten Down The Hatches

Unlike many who have become numb to the political process and the appearingly never-ending personal shortcomings of a growing minority of our elected officials, I see it from a unique perspective.

UB 2020

Another Sunday and another New York State politician on the radio proclaiming economic utopia for WNY and upstate if UB 2020 is passed and implemented. Over the last 30 years I had been led to believe that New York’s and upstate New York’s problems are the result of high taxes (property and income), high utility rates, and excessive regulations. All these have been documented and discussed in the media. When I listen to the excessive number of community leaders who have attached themselves to UB 2020 as this century’s “economic growth” vehicle, I have to remember the stories of “lemmings to the sea” or the Pied Piper.

Crossroads

The construction of an expressway US 219 between Springville and Salamanca to connect the existing expressway portions already there could be beneficial. However, this must be done right as to not build through landslide areas, adversely affect existing farmland, or build wind farms down the median. My father taught me when doing household chores or helping him on house or yard projects, “If you’re going to do something, do it right.” The NYSDOT is apparently not doing this, and neither is the Peace Bridge Authority.
