In addition to a stellar wine list, Allen St. Hardware’s full-service bar features some great top-shelf liquor and great beers. Fantastic small, seasonal menu with daily specials; we recommend trying their regularly appearing cheese board with a pint of Flying Bison or a Belgian triple. There’s a small patio perfect for Allentown people-watching, and come the weekend a healthy late-night bar scene is paired with thumping music spun by guest DJs.
Made brand-new in 2005, Amaryllis is an elegant new addition to the downtown Delaware Avenue area, with a sunken dining room and beautiful, exposed brick walls. A creative and delicious menu rivals that of the storied Rue Franklin, in whose kitchen the co-owners and chefs met.
Ambrosia’s trendy feel erases all preconceived notions of it being just another Greek diner—as do menu items like the smoked salmon sandwich and dolmades stuffed with rice and ground beef. It does Greek as well as anyone, though, and its prices only slightly reflect its classy atmosphere. Ambrosia has a tendency to fill up quickly, especially at breakfast and lunch. For dinner, enjoy nightly specials and a slightly upscale Mediterranean menu.
The “Boss of the Sauce“ winners in 1997 and 1998 in local radio station KISS 98.5’s annual contest. More than just a neighborhood restaurant, Amici’s has a large, diverse menu featuring Italian classics, tantalizing specials and generous portions. Catering and private parties are also available.
Amy’s Place is a small neighborhood diner in University Heights that specializes in Lebanese-American food. It’s an institution in the area, especially with the college crowd. They’re also known for their breakfasts. There are other mainstream dishes available—fajitas, taco salads, etc.—but the Lebanese food is the star here. The tabbouleh alone is worth a trip.
Astoria, which features Greek-influenced fare in a fine-dining atmosphere with tremendously friendly service, also boasts one of the best patios in the city. With two fresh shipments every week, Astoria’s seafood is always a good bet.
