Ohio’s Republican Speaker of the House Resigns Under FBI Probe Into His Spending

Republican State Speaker of Ohio Cliff Rosenberger abruptly announced his resignation last night over an FBI investigation of his spending and travel. Rosenberger hired a defense attorney after federal agents started an inquiry into his activities, including a trip to London last summer with representatives from the much-loathed payday lending industry. In his announcement Rosenberger said the inquiry “could take months or even years to resolve,” adding “Ohioans deserve elected leaders who are able to devote their full and undivided attention” to issues facing the state. It seems republican resignations are rising like Louisiana floodwater.

House Speaker Pro Tempore Kirk Schuring, a Canton Republican, will take over as House speaker until the House elects a new speaker to serve through the end of the year.
