Endorsement Comes on the Heels of Massive Organizing Event, Gains in Polls, String of Other Major Progressive Endorsements
NEW YORK, NY — With fresh momentum from a massive statewide organizing event and a new poll showing Cuomo’s lead cut in half, Democratic candidate for governor Cynthia Nixon was endorsed by the New Kings Democrats (NKD), a progressive, grassroots political organization committed to bringing transparency, accountability, and inclusionary democracy to the Kings County Democratic Party.
“I am thrilled to have the support of the New Kings Democrats who are on the frontlines of transforming local politics in Brooklyn,” said Cynthia Nixon. “NKD knows that real change comes from the bottom-up — from the power of community organizing and grassroots activism. I look forward to working with this incredible group of change-makers to shake up the status quo in Brooklyn and across the state.”
The endorsement comes on the heels of a major organizing milestone Thursdaynight, when thousands of activists participated in more than 110 house parties throughout the state to kick off Working Families for Cynthia. The night was organized to activate the grassroots power of the Working Families Party, which will unleash an army of progressive activists that can volunteer by door-knocking, making calls and engaging voters in neighborhoods across the state.
Cynthia won the New Kings Democrats endorsement Thursday evening after speaking to members. Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul was also in attendance to vye for the coveted endorsement, but members voted enthusiastically in favor of Cynthia. Founded by veterans of the Obama campaign, NKD serves as a training ground for individuals seeking to become more engaged in local politics, and hopes to nurture a new generation of elected Brooklyn Democratic leaders.
“The NKD membership is thrilled to endorse Cynthia Nixon for Governor of New York,” said New Kings Democrats President Brandon West. “Not only are we excited to push for an actual progressive agenda at the state level but also to support her campaign as it works to bring more people in through grassroots organizing, and opens the Democratic Party so that it is more transparent and accountable. As a club formed by former Obama organizers, we are excited by her agenda, and look forward to spreading the message that we can change the way our local politics works, and do more for New Yorkers in need.”
The NKD endorsement marks the fourth endorsement of the week for the campaign. In just the last four days, Council Member Carlos Menchaca, Democracy for America, and Daily Kos have also thrown their support behind Cynthia’s bid for governor. This adds to an even longer list of endorsements over the last few weeks, including the Working Families Party, Make the Road Action, Citizens Action, and the New York Progressive Action Network, with more announcements expected in the coming weeks.
