Harry Potter Day at the Erie County Library Kickstarts Summer Reading

Free Crafts, Storytelling, Photo Ops, Games, Live Music and More at Central Library

Witches, wizards and muggles alike are invited to Harry Potter Day @ the Library from 12 noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 22 at the downtown Central Library, 1 Lafayette Square, Buffalo. This magical celebration will feature fun, free activities for all ages, including the kickoff to Summer Reading 2019 and a performance by internationally known wizard rock band Harry and the Potters.

Dozens of free activities will take place inside the library and, weather permitting, outdoors in Buffalo’s Reading Park in front of the library’s Washington Street entrance. There will be Hogwarts house sorting, trivia questions in the Triwizard Tournament, crafts in Charms and Transfiguration classes, Felix Felicis potions, mandrake planting in Herbology, fun fortune telling in Divination, Care of Magical Creatures with Buffalo Animal Adventures, Quidditch matches and more. Costumes are encouraged; there will be numerous photo ops as well as a costume parade and contest. Nitro Magic© will provide free iced cream on a first come, first served basis, and food trucks will sell refreshments on site.

At 2 p.m. the Summer Reading 2019 program will be announced. This year’s free events and activities will explore the theme A Universe of Stories. At 4 p.m. the band Harry and the Potters will perform a high-energy live show. Since founding the wizard rock genre in 2002, the band has released three albums and played over 800 shows in libraries, clubs, bookstores and basements around the world.

“We are thrilled to host Harry Potter Day @ the Library,” said Library Director Mary Jean Jakubowski. “J.K. Rowling’s beloved series has inspired generations of readers, and this celebration of the magic of stories will have all-ages activities to appeal to everyone. We are especially pleased to welcome back the talented band Harry and the Potters, who last performed at Central Library in 2007!”

This event is supported by The Buffalo News, Western New York Family Magazine, National Grid, Hilton Garden Inn, Ciminelli Real Estate Corporation, National Fuel, Grey Line Outdoor Advertising and Rich Products Corporation.
