Blues Rocker Joanne Shaw Taylor at BABEVILLE August 15, plus more August shows

Thu. Aug 15 Joanne Shaw Taylor w/ special guest Tommy Z

Asbury Hall 6 pm doors, 7 pm show

British blues guitarist Joanne Shaw Taylor was discovered by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics at the age of 16. In the two decades since, she’s carved out an impressive niche in the world of blues-rock. After witnessing her inspired musicianship, Stewart invited her to join his super group D.U.P., setting the wheels in motion for a flourishing musical career. Taylor’s prodigious talent has earned her accolades from many industry giants including Jimmy Cliff, Joe Bonamassa, Stevie Wonder, and Annie Lennox.

Joanne has evolved into a prolific songwriter, with each of her albums being more successful than the last. Her sixth recording, Reckless Heart, broke into the UK Top 20 Album Chart in 2019, solidifying her standing as an important British blues-rock export.

In a significant collaboration, Joanne teamed up with producers Joe Bonamassa and Josh Smith for her seventh record, The Blues Album, released under Bonamassa’s independent label in 2021. The powerhouse project not only showcased Joanne’s deepening artistry and evolving sound but also earned critical acclaim and popularity, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Blues Chart. This achievement marked a pivotal moment, underscoring her status as a leading figure in the blues-rock genre.

Fri. Aug 23 Owen w/ special guest Jeremy Boyle

The 9th Ward 7pm Doors, 8pm Show

Spanning more than two decades, Mike Kinsella’s widely influential songwriting has steadily sharpened and evolved with each new chapter. In his solo vehicle as Owen (in addition to his roles along the way with American Football, Cap’n Jazz, the more recent LIES, and other collaborative ventures), Kinsella’s ability to seamlessly stitch jagged emotional currents into crushingly beautiful songs has remained at the forefront of his art. This contrast has become more distinct as Owen expanded from unassuming acoustic beginnings into more ornate production, reaching new levels of complexity and clarity by the release of 2020’s The Avalanche. The Falls of Sioux, Kinsella’s newest Owen full-length, levels up even further. As much as these nine songs represent a type of reinvention, they also feel like the natural next step in Kinsella’s growth, both artistic and personal. The album perforates an established sound to explore unlikely musical ideas, while the songs document a time of moving through life-altering turmoil into brighter days. Heavy themes are turned over with a gentle hand, and Kinsella inhabits the deeper perspectives that come with hard-earned life experience.
