The Milk Carton Kids are an American indie folk duo consisting of singers and guitarists Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan. The Grammy-nominated duo has emerged as a powerful voice defining the continuing folk tradition. In addition to a Grammy nomination, the Milk Carton Kids won the prestigious Duo/Group of the year at the Americana Music Award in 2014. Yet while some of the band’s accolades reference a specific genre, the duo transcends those tags with clear inflections of jazz, classical, and even the dark lyricism of modern “alternative.” Joey Ryan is a master guitarist who plays a vintage 1951 Gibson J-45 guitar and Kenneth Pattengale plays a 1954 Martin O-15. The Milk Carton Kids teach us thatamerican music is be taken at its expansive word, without confines or borders, and they have taken that lesson to heart.
