Buffalo, NYEleven Twenty Projects is delighted to announce Shasti O’Leary Soudant’s upcoming exhibition, Do Not Mistake Our Softness for Weakness. O’Leary-Soudant’s newest sculptures focus on simultaneity and navigate the multifaceted and complex qualities ascribed to the feminine and the masculine. Formal rigor, Neomodernist simplicity and complex cultural concerns amalgamate in two inviting bodies of sculptural work: Priapic Yinand Burst Star.

The Priapic Yin march through the gallery en masse, physically and tangibly illustrating faulty gender-based distinctions. We understand this both from an intellectual and primal perspective – each undulating form connects with its counterparts, flowing brightly through space and making plain the intricacies and issues of attributes like softness or hardness belonging to one gender or the other. The sculptures are colorful, large, playful, sensual, serious, and socially germane. They beg to be touched and the visitors are welcome to do just that.

Continuing this conversation, the large and small Burst Star works appear soft and appealing from afar, but surprise the viewer up close with their sharp points. Dual visions, multipurpose perspectives, and a reminder that appearances are deceiving when paired with assumption, the artist relates them to the construction, maintenance and violation of contemporary social contracts: “You want to touch them but you know you shouldn’t.”

Please join us for the opening reception on First Friday, September 7, 2018 from 6 – 9pm.
