Dear friends, it’s time to get energized! Fat Tuesday is upon us: On Tuesday, March 8, we’ll be at more than 40 venues with beads, bands, bracelets, and a bayou-vibed float parade that hits the streets at 5pm, departing from the Albright-Knox and running through Allentown and the Chippewa district.

There’s been a lot of chatter for the last few years about the world ending in 2012. And this ain’t your run-of-the-mill, buy-some-guns-and-dried-food-and-head-for-the-hills sort of end of the world. Nope. This one has the whole planet imploding or exploding, reversing its poles, losing its atmosphere, getting peppered by moon-sized asteroids, or just burning up in a big house fire.

If Buffalo and Erie County Library director Bridget Quinn-Carey felt any sense of irony as she welcomed an audience of 45-50 people to a forum on organized labor in the Central Library’s auditorium last Thursday, she didn’t signal it. The soon-to-depart (for New York City) Quinn-Carey has been presiding over a serious reduction in employment, services, operating hours, and materials for several months.

Every one of us experiences our own introduction to the aspects of our collective culture that shapes the way that we perceive and understand that culture. I attended my first classical music concert in 1961 while attending the now long-gone St. Stanislaus Parochial School on Buffalo’s East Side.

“Anyone going should know it’s a realistic look at the ’80s. We didn’t want to pull any punches,” says Topher Grace, who not only stars in but co-produced and wrote the original story for Take Me Home Tonight.

Tombstone, Ariz., which was the site of the legendary 1881 Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (made into a 1957 movie), is about 70 miles from the Tucson shopping center where a U.S. congresswoman, a federal judge and others were shot in January. A Los Angeles Times dispatch later that month noted that the “Wild West” of 1881 Tombstone had far stricter gun control than present-day Arizona.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): If I were you, Pisces, I’d make interesting fun your meme of the week. According to my reading of the astrological omens, you will be fully justified in making that your modus operandi and your raison d’etre.
