Look around, look in the mirror, talk to your friends, your enemies, whomever—we’re suffering a societal depression. I’m not talking about an economic depression. This is more pervasive. It involves a loss of hope, a fear of the future, a general sense of despair.

Anti-frackers have reason to despair. The New York Times recently editorialized that hydraulic fracturing of deep strata to release their hydrocarbons is “safe.” President Barack Obama looks upon the massive exploitation of shale-trapped fossil fuels as a major national opportunity.

I think my husband loves his boat more than he loves me. When he first got it a few years ago he was thrilled. He spent the whole first summer out on the water. I don’t really like it, I get queasy on the water—but I thought it was an infatuation for him that would wear off. No. He’s spending even more time with it.
