Paladino's waterfront plan is "politics as usual", not "progress"

During his first eight years as Buffalo’s mayor, Byron Brown has been unable to decrease the city’s poverty rate, improve the quality of education, or enhance the health of Queen City residents. It is no surprise, then, that his re-election campaign has chosen to emphasize what it calls “progress”—in the form of economic development—as the Brown administration’s major accomplishment.

Ban Fracking Activities on County Land

Easter. How nice it would be to wear a bonnet in an Easter parade…Instead, I will bring up an unpleasant topic. Benzene. Rhymes with “mean.” Benzene is a chemical that causes cancer. Benzene is a tiny, tight ball of carbon molecules that acts like a bullet, ripping through cells and DNA of life forms. Trucks with benzene (plus its chemical rhyming cousins toluene and xylene) might be coming this way. Even though the City of Buffalo has a ban of fracking, even though there is a statewide delay on fracking permits, keep reading. Keep danger off our doorsteps.

While sitting in Dolci Bakery today, I was reading Artvoice’s “Anxiety of Influence” article (Artvoice, March 21). I was just getting to the end, feeling inspired to maybe stick around after graduation, or even to come back home after completing graduate school. Minutes earlier, I was talking with my girlfriend, who works at Dolci, about how broke we are; my last debit card transaction was declined due to insufficient funds. I was reading Artvoice to find a free event that we could both enjoy later this evening. I mentioned that I was too broke to even go to a kegger on campus, which is obviously a wretched notion as a college senior.
