After 23 years, the Arties seemed new again this week, as a decided wave of youth permeated the festivities. It was a happy mix of veteran Buffalo theater folk and the next generation.

Band reunions are a tricky thing. Some reform merely for the money, others because their current careers aren’t going so well, and a small number because the music was so good, it mustn’t remain dormant.

Back in 1994, East Aurora residents Nancy McFarland Gaub, a BPO violinist, and her husband, pianist Eugene Gaub, decided “to help promote chamber music and enhance the quality of life in Western New York, by presenting a series of world-class, but readily accessible and easily affordable concerts in an intimate and uplifting setting,” in their hometown.

It’s not everyday one gets the opportunity to see a musician who has revolutionized the way people play his instrument. Considered one of the best bassists of all time, Les Claypool of Primus has done just that, and he’ll be bringing his band to North Tonawanda this week for a free outdoor concert.

“Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” has not always been a consoling thought to patrons of Western New York’s summer concert scene. For a decade or so, music fans of my generation have enjoyed the bliss of seeing bands we’ve loved for years at outdoor shows on long summer evenings. And if the band doesn’t have all of its original members, well, go to the box office and ask for your money back. Except there’s no box office because it was a free show!

It’s all happening. That’s what I said to Christian Edie when I called her from my apartment in China one morning to talk about her project, Silo City Rocks. We spent the first few minutes gushing over how excited we were that the ideas we had talked about only a few short months ago were actually coming to fruition.

Okay, or her garage. And by old car, I don’t necessarily mean the expensive 1957 Corvette that you’re afraid to drive anywhere. No, there are hundreds, nay, thousands of old, fun-to-drive (and just plain show-off) vehicles sitting in the driveways and garages of Western New York. And now that summer is arriving, we’re starting to see them on the streets again.

It was early June, 1813. For the first time in the war, the Americans had naval support on Lake Ontario and a land force on the Niagara capable enough to attack someone. Their capture of Fort George in Newark (today’s Niagara-on-the-Lake) was a gut-punch to the British in Ontario. They missed scoring the complete knockout when the fort’s former commander, Brigadier General John Vincent, and his redcoats were on the run, but Vincent was still on the ropes.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): How free do you want to be, Gemini? A tiny bit free, hemmed in by comfortable complications that require you to rely on white lies? Or would you rather be moderately free in ways that aren’t too demanding—politely, sensibly free?

Amanda Hart is turning her house at 887 Clinton Street into studio space for up-and-coming artists. On Saturday, June 1, the folks at Buffalo Custom Art (you can find them on Facebook) hosted a cookout to introduce the community to their venture. And while they were at it, they created this mural on a building across the street from the studios.
