News of the Weirdby Chuck ShepardIn October, the government of Singapore, anxious about the city’s declining birth rate, began teaching its high school polytechnic students in formal courses on how to flirt. Said Isabel, 18: “My teacher said if a guy looks into my eyes for more than five seconds, it could mean that he is attracted to me, and I stand a chance,” according to a March Reuters dispatch. The course includes “love song analysis” and how to chat online. |

The Runway Comes to WNY and it's About Timeby Agathi GeorgiouFor the first time in the history of the program, the Fashion majors at Buffalo State College will be staging their own fashion show as well as strutting their stuff with a red carpet extravaganza during Friday’s Gusto at the Gallery at the Albright-Knox. Free Will Astrologyby Rob BrezsnyGEMINI (May 21-June 20): Even if you have no plans to get married, I suggest you enter the Toilet Paper Wedding Dress Contest, in which rival designers compete to create beautiful bridal gowns using bathroom tissue. You just might win, thereby earning the cash prize. Why do I say that? Because according to my reading of the omens, you now have a special skill at conjuring up cheap elegance in service to your urge to merge. You have an unusual knack for turning things of little apparent worth into valuable aids to intimacy. |
Advice |
Ask AnyoneLast month at an anti-war rally I met a member of Christian Peacekeepers, a group that confronts injustice and violence all over the world, often at great risk to themselves. I was moved by the woman’s commitment to peace, and really taken by this as well: Christian Peacekeepers don’t pay taxes. She said that she couldn’t support a war-making government, that it would contradict her religious belief. Now, I’m not particularly religious, and I don’t see myself setting off to war-torn Afghanistan to help villagers, but I am fed up with my government and its wars. Should I (or may I) cut out my support for the war machine and stop paying taxes? |
