Frozen Riverby George Sax |
The waterway in the title of Courtney Hunt’s film is the Saint Lawrence, which does predictable double duty as a crucial topographical feature of Frozen River’s frigid northern New York setting and as a metaphor for the treacherously thin economic basis for life at the bottom of this country’s social hierarchy. |

Everybody Wants to be Italianby M. Faust |
It’s a shame this comedy wasn’t in release a few months ago—how perfect would it have looked on the marquee at the North Park during the Italian festival! Don’t look for it there, though—even though this is the kind of independent comedy about the pleasures of ethnic identity that does great business audiences at arthouse theaters (i.e., My Big Fat Greek Wedding; The Bread, My Sweet), Everybody Wants to be Italian is getting a wide release.
