Joan Baez is an American folk music icon and is a central figure in the early days of the Newport Folk Festival, where she sang a duet with a young kid named Bob Dylan. She has performed publicly for over 55 years and recorded over 30 albums. Her music often contains songs of protest and social injustice, a sign of her coming of age time. Baez began her recording career in 1960 and her first three records all achieved gold record status. In 1969, her appearance at the Woodstock Festival afforded her an international musical and political podium, particularly after the release of the film “Woodstock.” Joan Baez used her popularity as a vehicle for social protest, singing and marching for human right and peace. In 2009, the Public Television show “American Masters” aired “Joan Baez: How Sweet the Sound” as a tribute to her storied career. Joan won the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Joan once said “I went to jail for 11 days for disturbing the peace: I was trying to disturb the war.”
