Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American rock band best known for popularizing the Southern rock genre during the 70’s. The band rose to worldwide recognition on the basis of its live performances and signature tunes “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Free Bird.” At the peak of their success, three members, including lead singer and founder Ronnie Van Zant  and lead guitarist extraordinaire Steve Gaines died in an airplane crash in 1977. Ronnie Van Zant was replaced by his younger brother, Johnny Van Zant and he continues today as the band’s lead singer. In 2008, the solo of “Free Bird” was named the third greatest guitar solo of all time by Guitar World, certainly a posthumous tribute to Steve Gaines. Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.
