The New Riders of the Purple Sage is an American country rock band emerging from the psychedelic rock scene in San Francisco in 1969. The best known song of the band was “Panama Red.” The present day lineup isn’t just an oldies band and latest album “Where I Come From” is certainly proof of that. The album features eight new Robert Hunter/David Nelson tunes that are fresh, fiery and funkier than ever. The soaring jams of veteran guitarist David Nelson and pedal steel monster Buddy Cage remind listeners of the heyday of the early sounds of the Grateful Dead. By the way, Jerry Garcia was an original member of the band before he formed the Grateful Dead. The San Francisco rock scene of the Haight-Asbury days is alive and well at the Sportsmen Tavern.
