Off the Menu: New Eats on Amherst

Off the Menu

Black Rock welcomed its newest eatery, the Black Rock Kitchen and Bar (491 Amherst Street), last week Thursday.

Charlie Goldman, owner of the popular Allentown Street Hardware Café (245 Allen Street), has worked his magic once again, helping to revitalize a neighborhood in need of a facelift. Black Rock, one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, has seen a resurgence of local entrepreneurs investing their time and money. From the relocation of Delish (previously at 802 Elmwood) to 414/416 Amherst Street to the neighborhood staple, Spar’s European Sausage Shop (405 Amherst Street), businesses are opening their doors and creating a renaissance of sorts in the historic district.

The Black Rock Kitchen and Bar (BRKB) has been under construction for nearly a year. The re-use of the building has managed to retain its historic charm while creating a bistro, café, restaurant, and tavern feel.

BRKB offers diners a warm and welcoming space to grab a spot at the bar or take a table and enjoy a wide variety of eclectic American cuisine. There are a hundred plus beers available on tap and or in bottle.

Chef Dunbar Berdine is behind the stove creating menu items that are both unique and comforting, putting his own twist on well known eats. His BLT is dressed up with duck confit, and the French toast sandwich is made more decadent with the addition of foie gras. For diners looking to stay a bit closer to their comfort zones, burgers, simple salads, and pizzetta are also tossed in the mix.

This cozy and interesting eating place seats approximately 40 people without counting the coveted bar stools. According to Goldman, he plans on opening the doors seven nights a week starting at 5pm.

While the new establishment is still constructing and improving their website, they can be found on facebook at Black Rock Kitchen and Bar.
