At the Schoellkopf Power Station

Last Friday, the Niagara Preservation Coalition asked the New York State Supreme Court’s Appellate Division to issue an injunction stopping work at the site of the former Schoellkopf Power Station, where the Maid of the Mist tour operators are building a dock and winter boat storage. The Niagara Preservation Coalition’s original suit to prevent the site’s use for the Maid of the Mist project was dismissed by Justice Rose Sconiers, at least in part because the state agencies pushing the project pledged that they would not “remove or destroy the remnants of the plant” and would create a plan to preserve and protect any significant building remnants discovered during construction. Despite those assurances, this photograph, taken by Niagara Preservation Coalition president Louis Ricciuti, shows workers removing a steel beam original to the power station and depositing it in a dumpster to be scrapped.
