Preview: A Spell to Ward Off the Darkness at Squeaky Wheel
by M. Faust
The Little Red Booking film series resumes on Wednesday at 7 pm at Squeaky Wheel with A Spell to Ward Off the Darkness, a collaboration between Ben Russell and Ben Rivers, each an acclaimed experimental filmmaker in his own right. The movie is structured as a triptych linked by a silent visitor, musician Robert A.A. Lowe. He visits a commune in Estonia and listens as the participants discuss their utopian ideals as well as daily drudgeries. He spends time alone in a remote region of Norway, where a cabin is the only evidence of man’s existence. Finally he performs with a black-metal band at a Norwegian bar, in a performance captured in a single fluid 30-minute take. The screening will include a performance by local drone band VWLS.
