Sheltered: Volume 1

by Ed Brisson (Author), John Christmas (Illustrator)

This graphic novel is a tale of pre-apocalyptic survival at any cost. In this age of fear and uncertainty, we see advanced preparedness communities springing up all across rural America and around the globe. End of the world “preppers” are what these communities are called. Sheltered elicits a mood harking back to the Cuban Missile Crisis era of the 1960s when the total nuclear destruction seemed a serious possibility. The settlement of Safe Haven is one such prepper community in this powerful and smart take on apocalyptic fever. As the Parents from Safe Haven go about planning their lives for when the end arrives, we see the strain this creates, especially on their children. This graphic novel is psychologically charged with humanity and reveals knee-jerk attitudes towards potential threats and the effect of living in fear in America. Creators, Ed Brisson and Johnnie Christmas bring this “end of days” parable ticking towards a reckoning, but it’s a reckoning which does not arrive as scheduled, and new and totally unexpected devastation develops in this “safe” Haven. Sheltered delivers a strong dose of reality under pressure and much more in a strong narrative from this highly recommended series.
