Mind Mgmt: Volume 1

Matt Kindt (Author and Illustrator), Dark Horse (Publisher)

> Review by Brian Kearney

Ever get the feeling that you’re not in control of your life? That your actions and thoughts are being controlled by some outside force? This is the paranoid reality that surrounds the story of MIND MGMT, written and illustrated by Matt Kindt. It’s the reality that character Meru stumbles upon when she investigates the mysterious circumstances behind a flight where everyone on board loses their memories. She finds herself caught in a power struggle between the agents of the MIND MGMT organization. Agents who can predict the future, who can control the actions of others, and who can even defy death. While the first volume only scratches the surface of the mysteries of the world it’s an engaging introduction that leaves you wanting more. While Kindt’s artwork might be simplistic for some, his storytelling skills shine through that simplicity. And his use of full-page spreads as well as his use of watercolor over his pencils is stunning. MIND MGMT is one of those stories that you can revisit over and over again and still find new mysteries beneath the surface. It’s Kindt’s most ambitious work yet and it’s easy to see that it’s a labor of love for him.
