Best of Buffalo: A Few of My Favorite Things

After more than 1,400 of you sent us your ballots and voted for your favorite bars, restaurants and other hotspots around Buffalo, we wanted to know how the home team measures up to other cities between the East and West Coast. We asked non-Buffalo natives how the Queen City rules in comparison to the bigger and brighter lights of New York, Philly or San Francisco. More importantly, we asked what were some of the things about Buffalo that made them want to stay.

Where have you lived other than Buffalo and what were some of the best things about living there? I lived in Philadelphia for 30 years. The best thing was the club scene. South Street, Delaware Avenue…a lot of good spots to hang out and have some fun.

How does Buffalo compare? It doesn’t. Chippewa is way too small, you’ve got like seven clubs. We have that in one spot on South Street.

What’s your favorite thing about Buffalo? I like it here better, it’s quieter here. I like all the little things. I used to live in the concrete jungle, so having grass on a lawn and seeing trees everywhere is kind of nice. Besides that, there’s a lot of nice Christian churches. I like church. I’m a born-again Christian, and there’s a good fellowship out here, which is really nice as well.

Name: Beverly Schenker

Occupation: Bookkeeper

Residence: Williamsville

Where have you lived other than Buffalo and what were some of the best things about living there? I lived in Cleveland, Ohio. The best things about it were the symphony, the baseball team and the football team. I liked the weather and the friendliness of the people.

How does Buffalo compare? I look at Buffalo as a small Cleveland. We get pretty much the same entertainment that we had in Cleveland and the same opportunities. But the Bisons to me, after watching the Indians, are like watching Little League.

What’s your favorite thing about Buffalo? The Philharmonic. I like the people, it’s small, and no traffic. Less traffic than Cleveland anyway.

Where have you lived other than Buffalo and what were some of the best things about living there?

Montana, Sacramento, Seattle, San Francisco, Berkely, Las Vegas, Wyoming, Reno and Los Angeles…I think that’s it. San Francisco is the most visually appealing, a good music scene, a good art scene, as far as having the best of every aspect and always having something to do.

How does Buffalo compare? I like Buffalo a lot for the same reasons, but it’s not as big. And only in certain little areas. The way [San Francisco] was built, as close to the water you get the more developed it is and the further away from the water the less developed it is. And that’s really different here. I think that has a really big impact on the city.

What’s your favorite thing about Buffalo? I really like the Allentown area. It’s got a good art scene that is not recognized enough, and there’s a lot of undiscovered talent here. That’s what I see of Buffalo—it seems like a dead place where a lot of live artists are.

Name: Luis Camacho

Occupation: Store clerk

Residence: Buffalo

Where have you lived other than Buffalo and what were some of the best things about living there? I’ve lived in New York City all my life. The best things were the nightlife, the restaurants, the theater and shopping.

How does Buffalo compare? I’ve learned how to love Buffalo because it’s much calmer, and the people here are really, really good people. They do a lot of things for the homeless, for the poor. I love the architecture in Buffalo and the summers here. I’m not too crazy about the politics, that it takes forever to get something done.

What’s your favorite thing about Buffalo? My favorite thing is that I have wonderful friends here, what I call loyal friends from the heart.
