Bouncers or Bust?

After recent batterings involving bouncers in downtown bars and nightclubs made the news, city officials are playing with the idea of regulating all bouncers by making them go through a licensing certification program. City officials say that such a program will help to curb the violence that news reports say is rampant in downtown bars—but they also recognize that these licenses will cost the city money and plenty of man-hours. Moreover, there are plenty of bar patrons who believe that this is just a load of media hype fomented by a few isolated incidents. So the question must be asked: Is the media searching for a problem that doesn’t exist, or is this a real issue that should be taken care of before it gets too far out of hand?

Do you know of anyone, or have you yourself, had any problems with bouncers while at a bar or club? I haven’t really had much trouble with bouncers. I was just recently at a club that doesn’t ID that often and the bouncer there was actually very strict but polite, telling people that they had to leave because they did not have their ID with them. But I’ve also had one friend who was hit by a bouncer accidentally while he was trying to restrain someone who was fighting.

Are there any other professions that should be licensed and regulated? Not really, just the bouncers.

Who should have to pay for the licenses? I think the clubs themselves should have to pay for their bouncers to be licensed, but I can also see this as something the government does.

Is this a problem or just media hype? It doesn’t seem like it is one of the biggest problems out there and it probably is the media playing it up a bit. Yet I can see it being a problem in some areas—but if they are going to license those areas they should just license them all.

Do you know of anyone, or have you yourself, had any problems with bouncers while at a bar or club? The easiest example I can give is just when I was underage and people tried to get in with chalked IDs. Usually if someone is causing trouble at a bar the bouncer will ask them to leave, but no one has even been thrown out infront of me.

Are there any other professions that should be licensed and regulated? I think security guards are a better option. I think that if they had off duity police officers instead. Usually the bouncers are usually old friends of the owners and those are the people who cause the most conflict and trouble.

Who should have to pay for the licenses? The bar owners…if they can afford a liquor license, then I don’t see why they can’t afford to pay for security or a bouncers license.

Is this a problem or just media hype? I think that for the last 10 years it has been the media hyping it up. They’re making it a bigger deal than it really is.

Do you know of anyone, or have you yourself, had any problems with bouncers while at a bar or club? Personally I have not had any problems, but I know that when you go out to the nightclubs, the bouncers do different things. They let girls in easier and then give the guys a hard time. Other than that it just depends on where you go.

Are there any other professions that should be licensed and regulated? The major professions are already regulated, so I think that it is about time that bouncers be regulated too.

Who should have to pay for the licenses? The employer should pay for them.

Is this a problem or just media hype? I don’t think it is a major problem but it might as well be addressed. I don’t feel the cost would be that extraordinary, so they should just take care of it now.
