The Skyway Is Falling

Abandoned factory buildings comprise the city’s current waterfront view and residents must travel all the way to Woodlawn to find the nearest beach. The Pier, which should be one of the most successful restaurants in the city is seldom open and seldom full. Many people believe that the best way to change the waterfront situation would be the demolition of the Skyway. The Skyway costs $25 million a year to maintain and the land underneath the skyway, which happens to be right on the waterfront, can only be used as parking. In theory, the Skyway could be taken down, an alternate route of transportation could be created and land along the waterfront could be sold for business and residential purposes. However, there are those who feel that the demolition would be far too costly to be seriously considered. Also, there are citizens of Buffalo’s southtown suburbs who make the drive into the city every day and do not want to give up the Skyway’s beautiful morning view of Lake Erie. What do Buffalonians think?

Do you support the demolition of the Skyway? I do actually, because Buffalo takes forever to decide on everything. I just think if there’s something that looks like it could be positive, yes, you have to think about it, but they shouldn’t spend so much time deciding whether they should do it or not. It does cost a lot to keep it up so you might as well just tear it down.

Do you think that the cost of demolition and building a new transportation route would be too high to make this worthwhile? I don’t know too much about it, but I think Buffalo needs something, so I think it’s worth it.

Do you have any fond memories of the Skyway? If almost hitting someone because it’s so narrow counts, then I do. I mean, it’s nice, but my gosh it’s really dangerous too. It’s like one of those extreme sports things.

Occupation: Stay-at-home mother

Do you support the demolition of the Skyway? I don’t think so at this point. I think we need to find out what the businesses are that are going to go down there and how successful they are going to be.

Do you think that the cost of demolition and building a new transportation route would be too high to make this worthwhile? Yes, I think there are a lot of other important things going on in Buffalo that need to be funded.

What else can be done to help foster growth on the waterfront? Definitely some development, some great restaurants and great places to hang out that are family-oriented. There’s nothing family-oriented in downtown Buffalo. I think something like that for the kids would be a much bigger improvement. I love to see my sons’ excitement at seeing the water and just loving the water.

Do you support the demolition of the Skyway? Yes, I do, it is an ugly thing. You don’t appreciate the sight of Buffalo with that Skyway.

Do you think that the cost of demolition and building a new transportation route would be too high to make this worthwhile? That depends on how they invest the money, because believe me, people here don’t know how to manage money. Or anything, for that matter.

Do you have any fond memories of the Skyway? I have never seen a sunset or a sunrise up there. You can’t see anything; the space is so narrow that you have to be aware of who is by your side because people here drive crazy.

Name: Mark Drost

Occupation: Yoga studio owner

Residence: Buffalo

Do you support the demolition of the skyway? I do support it, I think the waterfront is completely wasted. I think we should do whatever it takes to revitalize that entire area. It’s such a beautiful piece of property gone to waste.

Do you think that the cost of demolition and building a new transportation route would be too high to make this worthwhile? I’m not an economist, but I don’t think so. I can’t imagine it could be because of the overwhelming benefits that will come from having that whole area open.

Do you have any fond memories of the Skyway? I do have some fond memories. It’s a nice view of the lake, but I think I’d rather see it from the ground level. Fond memories would be being stuck in the middle of the Skyway in the middle of wintertime and not being able to go anywhere.
