Queen City Roller Girls: April is the cruelest month

Mia Mauler pivots for the Nickel City Knockouts.

Coming up this Saturday, April 28, is a new round of roller derby action, when the Nickel City Knockouts take on the Devil Dollies in the Queen City Roller Girls league.

The Saucies are on a hot streak, coming off a victory in their last bout against the Nickel City Knockouts by a score of 104-79 back in March.

Top-scoring jammer (offensive position) on the Saucies was Mexicali Bruise, with an impressive 65 points. Coming in second was Sissy Fit with 16 points, and third was Alley Oops with 12. On the Knockouts, Janeiac led scoring with 54 points, far ahead of her teammates.

Saucies captain Dr. Dementer, who plays pivot, explains how teamwork and diligent practice lead to victories: “The Suicidal Saucies concentrated on working together as one team, learning to read each other during play, and building on the strengths of all players. We built up team morale by hanging out with each other and having fun in non-derby related atmospheres.”

Dementer was the team’s most penalized skater, racking up 10 infractions. She says hanging tough and taking penalties is crucial to the game. “Being the most penalized player tells me that I am doing my job and doing so very aggressively. As a pivot my job includes blocking, knocking people down and constantly engaging with the opponent.”

Mia Mauler, the terror-mongering defensive crux of the Knockouts, concedes that their opponents played a better game. “The Saucies showed that they put a lot of time and effort into their assault,” she says. “They were a fluid team and a tough opponent. While we sure gave them a run for their lives, overall the Saucies were better prepared for the bout.”

The Knockouts will be back on the warpath and looking to turn things around this Saturday against the Devil Dollies at the Rainbow Roller Rink in North Tonawanda at 7pm. This will be a bloody bout not worth missing. Visit queencityrollergirls.net for more information.
