Musical Fringe Benefits
by Buck Quigley
So you still think there’s little opportunity to hear hip, original music in Buffalo? Visit this year’s Infringement Festival and prove yourself wrong.
Over the course of 11 days, you’ll have a chance to see and hear such acts as Qualia—described as “experimental music rooted in jazz, psychedelia, and progressive rock that attempts to portray the full spectrum of emotion through music.” Or Shuttlecock—“The definitive nail in the coffin of the argument that a mere two people can’t make as much noise as three or four.” Both bands are clearly out to break barriers.
Like the anarchic festival itself, this year’s music offerings are a kaleidoscopic display of styles taking place at a variety of venues. And while you’d be cheating yourself culturally to focus on the music alone at such a diverse artistic explosion, there are some shows that stand out as “best bets” for fans of original music’s fringe element.
